Exploring Hershel Creek...by Mark Birkle

Hershel Creek is located just North of Owensville, Ohio. I entered off of Belfast - Owensville Road. Hershel Creek is in the first dip as you leave town, heading North. While looking for a place to park on the downstream end of the creek, I met an interesting gent named Eric Bach who lives at the junction of Hershel Creek and Stonelick Creek. He is an avid photographer, fossil and mineral hunter, walking stick carver, and investigator of the arcane. He had some great trilobites found in Hershel Creek and even a little gold that he had diligently panned from Stonelick. He became the guide for my nephew and I, on this two-mile trip. The creek and its falls starts out rather small but as it progresses deeper into the nicely wooded hillsides, each bend opens up into a new vista. There is a pleasant broad valley at the midpoint which later narrows and leads into the nicest sets of falls. The fading daylight and the resulting long shutter speeds added an artist look to the photos. Photos five and six were taken in near darkness. The water level was about perfect. We climbed out of the creek where Hershel Creek meets Stonelick Creek. This is where St. Rt. 132 crosses Stonelick in a sweeping bend. It was a great Spring outing.
