Jim Griggs
From first contact with the precision of his first 35mm camera in high school, Jim knew he had found the creative outlet he had been chasing. After graduating from college with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Jim acquired better photographic equipment and began a long learning process culminating in being invited to be an instructor at Wilderness Photography Workshops under world renowned photographer, Boyd Norton. While carrying on a full time profession in Technical Sales, Jim runs a small photography business doing weddings, portraits and commercial work for local clients in central Kansas. He is also president of the Great Plains Nature Photographers, a group of over 300 photographers located within the central plains states of the USA. His work has appeared in calendars, magazines including Wyoming Wildlife, Footprints, National Kart News, on the back cover of Backroads of Colorado, regional Sierra Club Publications, the Weather Channel and newspapers. Jim also teaches regional photography workshops in the great plains in addition to taking and leading photography trips. Recent trips include; Tanzania, the Galapagos Islands, Alaska, Hawaii and the Pacific Northwest in addition to numerous trips to the tallgrass prairies of both Kansas and Oklahoma. His philosophy about photography has been influenced highly by several close professional photographer friends including, Boyd Norton, Jim Richardson, Mario Corvetto, Kevin Schafer and Joel Sartore. "With so much emphasis on traveling to exotic locations in the past I have recently taken a new direction in my work concentrating on locations within the central plains states where I live. Jim Richardson of National Geographic has made me intensely aware the opportunities surrounding us here in the rolling plains of the central USA. Located just ten miles from my home, Jim Richardson’s gallery and his influence have been extremely important to my recent work. For now I am concentrating on submitting to markets within the plains states." "Up until a couple of years ago I shot exclusively with Canon manual focus equipment and only on transparency film. My recent equipment has been the exceptional line of Canon EOS professional cameras and L series lenses. I have added an Olympus E20n and Canon EOS 10D digital cameras. I think the digital equipment has added to my creative process."
